a biennalle pavillion: a city built on wood capped in stone

Professor: Robin Williams
Term: Fall 2018, University of Virginia
Location: Mumbai, India

Venice is a city built on wood but finished is stone, flipping Venice seeks to reverse the fabric of the city by introducing a timber cladded pavillion with a concrete interior. Users are filtered through the site from the south bridge towards the Cathedral of the Santa Maria. From entrance to exit the user is oriented to three main portals facing: the cathedral, the bell tower and the canal. The main atrium is a double height space highlighting a 20’ sculpture wrapped by a spiral staircase. The below level space is saved for a photo gallery which requires low lighting and a linear hallway to enhance the focus of users. Lastly the bridge connecting both main spaces is un-conditioned orienting users towards the canal.
