a transit hub: raising the rail in mumbai

Professor: Robin Williams
Term: Fall 2018, University of Virginia
Location: Mumbai, India

Moving Mumbai leverages a robust infrastructure as the foundation for infill development. The massive structure integrates with the three-story railway, mirroring the existing patterns of life in the city: a lifestyle centered around the rail. The new rail system is elevated up to three stories to reduce congestion on the western highway by dispersing commuters. Units are stacked vertically within this mega-infrastructure, continuously filling and emptying as the community grows and changes over time. Each resident engages in a system that fosters self-reliance, with food markets and trading stalls gradually occupying the central platform of the rail system.
